HOW IT HAPPENED

Ryan Kemp helped Werribee get off to a flying start with two goals in the first half of the opening quarter, but Richmond responded with three in a row to take a 16-point lead into the break. Wintery conditions swept over Punt Road Oval and settled in for the remainder of the contest. Late goals to Matt Munro and Tom Gribble restored the quarter time deficit at the main break. Richmond slammed on back-to-back goals inside five minutes of the third term, before majors to stand-in skipper Dom Brew and Nick Coughlan once again brought the margin back to 16 points at the final change.
Coughlan’s second in the opening minute of the fourth term closed the gap to ten points, but that would be as close as the ‘big W’ would get as Richmond answered every challenge to hang on for a 17-point victory.
Bior Malual impressed with his clean hands and composure in the scrappy affair, while Gribble, Brew and Joe Maishman fought hard in the clinches against premiership Tigers Josh Caddy, Jacob Townsend and Dan Butler.
