One dead, two injured after shooting in Corio

Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the death of a man in Corio this morning.

The incident took place on the Princes Highway just after 6am.

Detectives believe that three men in a silver station wagon were travelling east along Harpur Road when they turned onto a service road to access the highway.

As they were doing this, the station wagon was struck by a Melbourne-bound truck causing extensive damage.

Witnesses have told police that the occupant of a second vehicle, which was following the station wagon from Harpur Road, approached the damaged vehicle and discharged a firearm towards the occupants before fleeing from the scene.

A man, aged in his 40s, died at the scene from gunshot wounds while two other men were conveyed to hospital with minor injuries they sustained in the crash.

The truck driver was not injured.

Police believe the shooting was a targeted attack.

Detectives are investigating whether another firearm incident that occurred in Norlane prior to the fatal shooting is linked.
