P2 crews receive first-on-scene briefing at Central European Rally

The session, supported by the FIA Foundation’s Motor Sport Safety Grant, provided critical briefing on injury response, emergency actions, and practical life-saving techniques.

The Central European Rally week began with a vital first-on-scene briefing in Bad Griesbach, Germany, led by Dr. Cem Boneval, FIA Medical Delegate for the World Rally Championship (WRC), and dedicated to preparing P2 drivers and co-drivers for emergency situations.

Dr. Boneval, who was already a contributor to this briefing for its first edition at the WRC Rally Turkey in 2008, covered a range of essential topics. Theoretical components included recognizing potential injuries, conducting rapid on-scene assessments, and executing emergency responses. This was complemented by hands-on workshops where rally crews practiced vital skills, including responsiveness checks, emergency extrication, and cardiac massage.

Since its inception in 2008, the FIA Medical Group has aimed to conduct this safety briefing biennially for P1 crews, though it faced some interruptions during the Covid-19 pandemic. For the FIA Junior WRC Championship, however, this preparation is provided yearly before their inaugural event, ensuring that drivers are well-prepared to handle emergencies both on and off the special stages.
