Tarneit gets free custom fitness & wellbeing program
Wyndham City is partnering with Reclink Australia, a national non-profit provider of community sport and recreation programs, to bring a six-month program of free sports, fitness and recreation activities to the Tarneit community.
From February through to July, locals can join in sessions run by Reclink and local providers that will be tailored to the unique needs and aspirations of the Tarneit community.
The complete program of activities will be developed with community input. The sessions will be tailored to meet the health and wellbeing needs of three key community groups; women and girls, people from diverse backgrounds and young people aged 3 to 12 years.
From today, Wyndham City and Reclink encourage the community to make recommendations via a survey about the types of activities they want to see and sign up to be informed when sessions are live. Community members can head to wyndham.vic.gov.au/activetarneit to find a link to the survey and more information about the program.
Wyndham City Mayor and Active City portfolio holder Peter Maynard said: “We also know that COVID has put a huge strain on our community, and I’m thrilled Wyndham City is delivering this initiative which will absolutely improve the mental and physical health of our community members.”
“It’s rare that a free program can be designed with community input, and I’m proud we are working with the community in Tarneit to deliver activities that meet their needs.”
“Finding the time to stay active can be a challenge for all of us with busy lives, but this is an incredible opportunity to let us know what activities you are interested in and to sign up to try something new.”
Wyndham City is working to ensure that all community members are supported and empowered to reach their health and wellbeing goals through physical activity. This program will target the known barriers to participation in physical activity, including cost, lack of time, inclusivity and distance. Fitness, sports and wellbeing activities provided throughout this program will also help Wyndham City work towards the community’s desire for opportunities to get active, as outlined in the Wyndham 2040 Vision.
This program is supported by $70,000 in funding from the Tarneit Suburban Revitalisation Fund, $5,000 from Wyndham City Council and in-kind support from Reclink Australia.
Reclink CEO Dave Wells said: “We are pleased to partner with Wyndham City and the Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions on this initiative, I know the residents of Tarneit are going to love the Reclink staff, have a lot of fun at the programs and enjoy the physical and mental health benefits that sport and active recreation can bring to individuals and a community. I am looking forward to seeing these programs up and going.”
Member for Tarneit Sarah Connolly said: “We’re ensuring the growing local community has access to programs that fosters connection with one another, and these activity sessions are a great way for residents to socialise and exercise close to home.”
