Wyndham City Joins Mission For A Cooler Climate And Brighter Future
Wyndham City has proudly signed on to three critical climate change advocacy campaigns, joining forces with governments, cities, businesses, and communities worldwide to call for action.
As the United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) continues in Glasgow, Wyndham City signed the Better Futures Declaration and joined the Cities Race to Zero and Race to Resilience campaigns. Last month, Councillors endorsed Wyndham City’s support for these campaigns and expressed their shared commitment for action.
These campaigns call for immediate action to halve global emissions and work toward a zero-carbon future. The goals of these campaigns align with planning already in place at Wyndham City.
In June 2021, the Resilient Wyndham Strategy was endorsed by Council, which outlines Wyndham’s approach to mitigating and adapting to climate change. The strategy includes several targets: council decision making shall align with science-based targets in the Paris agreements, Wyndham City operations shall be carbon neutral by 2021 (excluding the Refuse Disposal Facility), Wyndham City Council buildings should be gas-free, and by 2040 Wyndham City will have transitioned to become a zero-carbon community.
Wyndham City’s Climate Future and Environment portfolio holder, Cr Robert Szatkowski, said: “We have put ambitious targets in place, and I look forward to our Council supporting the work required to ensure they are met.”
“We only have one chance at saving our climate from irreparable damage, and Wyndham City residents, business owners and community members have much to gain from the opportunity of cleaner, greener energy.”
“I’m looking forward to Wyndham City transitioning to become a leader in the mission to ensure a safe and healthy climate for future generations.”
