Arts at Your Doorstep returns for 2021 in Hobsons Bay

Hobsons Bay’s premier performing arts program Arts at Your Doorstep returns in 2021, with iconic Indigenous Australian singer songwriter Archie Roach AM setting the scene in style.

Roach will be performing his Tell Me Why show, a lyrical retelling of his life story of joy, pain and hope to an intimate setting at Williamstown Town Hall on 8 April, with tickets going on sale Thursday 25 February. This performance will be part of Roach’s last national tour.

Theatre lovers can immerse themselves in The Magnolia Tree, an emotionally-charged performance that tackles family secrets, death and dying with some tough decisions to be made, ultimately, the ending and final decision will be up to the audience. It will play at Altona Theatre on Thursday 8 May.

Meanwhile the one and only Damian Callinan brings his stage adaptation of the 2018 film, The Merger, to the Williamstown Town Hall on Thursday 29 April. The show explores the decline of a cash-strapped Aussie Rules rural footy club and the recruitment of refugees to keep the club viable. The Merger is also on the 2021 VCE list, with school bookings available.

Sounds of Silent will return with two hilarious, live music/cinema, family-friendly events as their five-piece band brings Buster Keaton’s silent movies, The Cameraman and Steamboat Bill Jnr, to life on 22 April at the Williamstown Town Hall and 7 October at Old Laverton School. Cabaret, choirs and children’s performance round out the season.

COVID affected live performance and the arts community greatly in 2020 and Arts at Your Doorstep was no different, with the program needing to be put on hold. Fortunately, almost all shows have been rescheduled and will be presented with COVIDSafe plans in place.

Arts at Your Doorstep is Council’s program that enables professional theatre experiences in each of its cultural venues. This year the Altona Theatre, Old Laverton School and Williamstown Town Hall will be in the spotlight.

Quotes attributable to Mayor of Hobsons Bay Cr Jonathon Marsden:

“After having last year’s performances put on hold due to the pandemic, we’re so pleased to be able to present this program for 2021 and celebrate arts and culture in Hobsons Bay.

“Arts at Your Doorstep enables people to go to see performances and theatre and experience the cultural spaces and venues in our city – and we are truly blessed in this regard. “I’m so excited to kick this season off by welcoming one of Australia’s most cherished artists, Archie Roach, to Hobsons Bay. Archie is one of our greatest storytellers and the way he shares his story through music is incredible. Don’t miss it!”
