HOW IT HAPPENED
Mark Williams’ men managed to buck their slow-starting trend and went into the first break a point in front after an entertaining ten-goal term. Essendon booted five consecutive majors in the second quarter to set up a ten-point lead at half-time. Werribee got on a run in the third term, kicking three on the trot, before the visitors went into the final change with back-to-back goals and the momentum. Werribee squandered multiple chances in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter, which ultimately proved costly as an impeccably accurate Essendon went onto consign the hosts to their second consecutive loss. The result was further soured by hamstring injuries to vitally important midfielders Josh Clayton and Matt Hanson.
